Turning Stone now has its own mobile fire brigade.

The fire brigade is the brainchild of Oneida Nation Fire Marshal Terry Winslow, who enlisted the help of Director of Security Bill Banning and Security Manager Dave Flynn in creating it. The brigade comprises the EMTs in the Security Department, all of whom are also affiliated with fire departments in their home towns and who needed little training to take on their new responsibilities at Turning Stone Resort and Casino. The resort has dealt with some fires over the years, most of them quite minor such as food flare-ups in kitchens.

The fire brigade’s mission is to keep small fires small when they do break out and to patrol the resort with an eye open for potential fire hazards.

But the brigade isn’t confined to the resort. It has its own fire buggy –a “mini firefighting apparatus.” It’s a tricked-out Polaris Ranger, a four-wheeler on firefighting steroids. It carries four kinds of fire extinguishers for every conceivable kind of fire – electrical, grease, garden-variety combustibles like wood and paper, and even car fires. It has a custom-made trunk for rolled water hoses and a large compartment for EMT equipment. The three-person cab is equipped with a heater and defroster for use during Central New York winters, and it can do 45 mph, ensuring a rapid response time.

This effort is another way to maintain the levels of safety for employees and guests at Turning Stone.
