JANUARY 2009 - HIGHLIGHTS
January will give us a little time to slow down after a hectic holiday season. It will also give us a chance to look ahead to the things we want to accomplish during the new year. One area of particular interest during these tumultuous economic times is personal finances. During the coming months we will offer opportunities to participate in financial literacy education programs on budgeting, saving, credit, debit, investing and retirement planning. There are a variety of great tools available to help Elders become proficient in basic financial topics. More information will follow in upcoming newsletters. For those who want to start out the year by increasing their level of physical fitness, we have a six-week strength and balance fitness class that begins January 8. To help those in our community who are caregivers, our new caregivers support group will begin on Tuesday, Jan 27. Call Jeanne Dee for more details. Be sure to check the rest of this newsletter for more activity information.

Strength and Balance Class with Linda Sevier
Linda Sevier will conduct a six-week strength and balance training class for Elders beginning Jan. 8 at 11:15 a.m. The 30- minute class will apply a variety of specifically targeted exercises designed to improve or maintain balance and flexibility. Linda will incorporate Thera-Bands and chair exercise in the class. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and sneakers to class. Visit Twin Orchards
A trip to Twin Orchards in New Hartford is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. Staying healthy during the flu season is a top priority for our Elders.
Mixed Pool Night
Let the games begin! As requested, we have scheduled a mixed pool night for the guys and gals to team up for some fun and laughs. It is all happening on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in the exercise room after soup and sandwich. Grab your partner and get some practice in for the start of this event and see which couple comes out as our first winners for the New Year.
Nelson Farms Country Store On Friday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m., a new venture awaits the Elders when we visit the Nelson Farms Country Store in Cazenovia. This popular local store dates back to the late 1800s and has been restored to its original design and purpose. This old time countrified store highlights some of the products made in the kitchens of Nelson Farms and the “Pride of New York” products from all regions of the state.
Trip to Weeden's Mini Mall
A winter trip to Weeden’s Mini Mall in Camden is planned for Friday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. This quaint shop continues to be an appealing place for Elders to find something that piques their interest. The friendly shopkeepers lend to the attraction of this setting as they always have hot drinks to offer customers on chilly wintry days.
Indoor Golfing at the Nation Dome
Indoor golfing at the dome is slated for Thursday, Jan. 15, following soup and sandwich. The Elders will venture to the green turf at the Nation’s state-of- the-art indoor driving and putting range for an opportunity to get in plenty of practice shots and have some fun and rewarding exercise.
Men's Pool Tournament
The men’s pool tournament will kick off the new year with a hearty buffet including ham and scalloped potatoes to welcome everyone back to the tables. We are hoping to see all of you there whether you are a player or a spectator.
Dart Challenge
We are inviting all Elders to take part in this new sports event at the Center on Tuesday, Jan. 20 after soup and sandwich. Ron Patterson will offer his expertise in the proper dart technique.
