March Highlights

March brings thoughts of springtime and a yearning to see crocuses spring forth from the snow dusted ground. Hopefully it will not be too long before we can put away the snow boots and parkas.
We will be warming things up this month with our annual homemade soup contest and learning some tricks of the trade from the experts chefs at the resort during our cooking classes at the Culinary School. May a little “luck of the Irish” be with the Elders attending the Irish Festival at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino on St. Patrick’s Day. The annual Three Sisters Dinner is this month - be sure to call in your reservations to the Health Center, as this popular event fills up fast.
Coming in April...Chocolate Festival Fundraiser. Coming in May...our 10th Annual Aging Well Conference!
Be sure to check the rest of this newsletter and check the calendar for more detailed information on activities for this month.

Grocery Shopping
A trip to Wegmans in DeWitt is planned for Wednesday, March 3 at 12:30 p.m. If time permits, we will check out other stores in the area too. Local grocery shopping will be on Friday, March 19 at 12:30 p.m.

Fleece "Tie" Blanket Project
This is a special intergenerational project the Elders will be crafting for the Early Learning Center little ones. Elders are given the opportunity to pass down a beautiful hand-made fleece blanket for the infants and mini-toddler classes that they can snuggle up with during nap-time. This class will be held Thursday March 4 and Thursday March 11 at 1 p.m. Don’t hesitate to be part of this special project for the children.

St. Patrick's Day Tea and Craft
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by making a decorative floral potted clover craft on Monday, March 15 at 1:30 p.m. This craft can be embellished with small leprechauns, glittering clovers and green ribbons as you choose. This is such a cute potted arrangement that can be used as a nice St. Patrick’s Day centerpiece. Following the craft, join us in the community room for a relaxing afternoon tea.

Men's 9-ball Pool Tournament
Come join the fun as the men compete in a 9-ball pool tournament on Wednesday, March 24. The competition gets underway at 5 p.m. and includes a buffet dinner in the exercise room.

Soup Contest
On Thursday, March 25 at 1 p.m. the Elders’ 3rd annual soup contest will begin in the dining room. All Elders present will serve as judges as they sample the tantalizing homemade soups prepared for this event. To enter, bring your completed soup to the Center in a crock pot to keep it heated. Ward off the winter chill by sampling some tasty homemade soups!

Swimming
Get your swimsuit ready! We will be going to the Turning Stone Resort and Casino to enjoy a dip in the pool on Thursday March 18 at 1 p.m. Shake off those winter blues by making a big splash.

Cooking with the Pros!
Learn some culinary tips from the talented chefs from Turning Stone Resort and Casino on Friday, March 12 & 26 at 1 p.m. at the Culinary School located at Dream Catcher Plaza.

  • Kuhl Highlights Oneida Women in History at DFAS Lunch Event

Kathy Kuhl, Oneida Nation’s Central New York Indian Outreach Coordinator, was a recent guest speaker at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service’s (DFAS) Women’s History Month ‘Lunch-and-Learn’ event. Kuhl told of the rich history and accomplishments of Oneida women. Her talk told of Sky Woman, the Three Sisters, Two Kettles, Polly Cooper, Mary Winder and the many Oneida women who have served and are currently serving this country as members of the armed forces. Her talk focused on the accomplishments of these and other Oneida women in history and she shared with the group information about the role of women in Oneida culture, a matrilineal society.
