September Highlights
As the summer winds down and the cooler weather approaches, we look forward to the change of seasons that makes fall in Central New York such a glorious time of year. This month we are traveling to Akwesasne to visit the St. Regis Elders. We also have a trip to the Corning Museum of Glass. See below for more information.

Reminder
The kitchen staff makes enough food for those who have signed up for lunch. Lunches for those who have signed up in advance will be saved until 12:30 p.m. that day. Unless you indicate that you would like your lunch saved, any unclaimed lunches will be available to those who show up without a reservation, or to elders who ask for seconds.

Upcoming Trips
September 14 and 15 - An overnight trip to visit the St. Regis Mohawk Elders. We will have lunch at the St. Regis senior center and have time for an activity and catching up with old friends. We will be staying at the Comfort Inn and have dinner at the casino. The bus will be leaving the Center at 8 a.m. The trip is free for Nation Elders, however a $20 refundable deposit is necessary to hold your reservation. If space permits, others may sign-up with $76 due at the time of sign-up.

September 17- A day trip to the world’s largest glass museum, the Corning Museum of Glass. The trip will include a group class in which you will learn how to make your very own glass souvenir. Please be sure to sign up so that you do not miss out. We will also be taking a tour of the museum and exploring a glass collection showcasing 35 centuries of glass art. The bus will leave the Center at 8:30 a.m. The trip is free for Nation Elders, however a $20 refundable deposit is necessary to hold your reservation. If space permits, others may sign-up with $35 due at the time of sign-up. Coming in October...fall foliage train ride to Old Forge, Iroquois Museum and Howe Caverns.

Enter the Healing Circle Health Fair
The 5th annual “Enter the Healing Circle” health fair will be held in the dining room on Thursday, September 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. An evening of spa treatments and personal wellness featuring pastry and cooking demos, mini chair massages, depression and other health screenings, paraffin wax dips, wheel of health game and more! Please note that due to the fair, no lunch will be served in the dining room that day. Elders can choose to join us for a luncheon outing that day, or sign-up to pick up a bagged lunch that day at noon.

Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic massage appointments are available once a month by Natalie Gibson, a licensed New York State massage therapist. Appointments are available on Monday, September 27. Call Jane or Danyelle to sign up.

Photography Club
Calling all shutterbugs. Check out the newly formed Photography Club at the Center. The club meets monthly and includes instructions in techniques as well as field trips. This month the meeting is on Wednesday, September 29 at 9:30 a.m. All Elders are welcome.

Lunch Outing and Farmer's Market
On Thursday, September 23 we will be traveling to Syracuse for a luncheon trip at Stella’s Diner. The trip is free for Nation Elders. If space allows, others can join us at their own expense. See Danyelle to sign up. After lunch we are off to the Syracuse Regional Market, where we will meet up with Registered Dietitian, Mike Washo. Mike will share tips on picking out the best seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Cake Decorating
Get the latest tips on how to decorate cakes from Jennifer DiGiorgio, Executive Pastry Chef from Opal’s Bakery. The class will be held on Thursday, September 16 at 1 p.m. Please be sure to sign up for this class and learn how to decorate like the pro’s.

Caregiver's Support Group
Our monthly caregivers support group, Teyakhishnyehe’, is an ideal place to share concerns and feelings with others who understand and can offer solutions and emotional support in a confidential setting. The group will meet on Wednesday, September 29 at 12 p.m. Call Jeanne at 829-8330 for more information.

  • Nation Honors Employees with 10-15-20 Years of Service

    Oneida Indian Nation employees with 10, 15 and 20 years of service were recognized at a Sept. 1 dinner. The Nation employment is now at about 4,800 and includes employees from both the government and business enterprises, including Turning Stone Resort and Casino. The Nation is the largest employer in Oneida and Madison counties, and the fourth largest employer in the16 counties of greater Central New York. This year, 154 employees reached the various career milestones.
