SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES


GP&S Offices closed Sept. 3 and Sept. 6

1.
Auricular acupuncture and guided imagery session at the Children and Elders Center Community Room, 5:15 p.m.
2.
Youth kickball is held Thursdays through October 28 from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. Games will be played outdoors. In bad weather, no kickball will be played.
4.
Weekend walking program begins, 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Outdoor running club for ages 15 and older. Meet at the Recreation Center at 1 p.m.
6.
Recreation Center open 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.
7.
Youth flag football, 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the softball field or gym. Ages 12-17.
10.
Youth Ambassadors Program meet and greet night in the Recreation Center, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Monthly dinner and social, 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.
13.
Youth golf program, 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Nation gym. Continues Mondays through October 25.
15.
Potluck and social, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
16.
Halloween party committee meeting, 6 p.m. at the Recreation Center.

Youth Ambassadors Program mini cooking class, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Location to be announced; meet at the Recreation Center.

Pizza and social, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Enter the Healing Circle, spa and personal wellness night at the Children and Elders Center, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Adults only; childcare available at the ELC for 2-12 year olds.
24.
Diabetes Wellness Weekend at the White Eagle Conference Center. Continues through Sept. 26. Open to diabetic and pre-diabetic Health Center clients.
Youth Ambassadors Program open enrollment dinner, 6:30 p.m., location to be announced.
27.
After School Program begins for grades 7-12 at the Recreation Center from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Personal Training Services
Personal training services with Linda Sevier are now available Monday through Friday, including evenings, by appointment. To schedule an appointment with Linda, call Mike Washo at (315) 829-8713 or 1-800-663-4324.

Outdoor Running Club
Runs will be held every Saturday in September at 1 p.m. The group will meet at the Recreation Center and run along the trails and roadways along Nation Homelands, Territory Road. Participants must be at least 15 years old, Nation employees also welcome. No registration is necessary but all participants will be required to sign a waiver. The final run will be up the trails of Rocky Mountain in Old Forge.

Youth Flag Football
The youth flag football program begins September 7 for age 12-17, from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. in the softball field or Nation gym, depending on the weather. The program is held Tuesdays through October 26. All participants will be required to have their parent/guardian sign a waiver.

Youth Golf Program
A golf program for age 10-17 will be held at the Nation gym from 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. beginning September 13 and continue every Monday through October 25. Participants who attend at least three golf sessions will be eligible to play at Sandstone Hollow.

Youth Development Program
After School Program
The ASP begins Monday, September 27 and is open to grades 7-12. Students meet at the Recreation Center Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. to complete homework assignments. Friday is swim day at the Ahsi Day Spa pool or lessons at the Golf Dome. Incentives will be offered for improving grades.

Youth Ambassadors Program
September activities for the Youth Ambassadors Program (YAP):
Friday, September 10 - meet and greet from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. in the Recreation Center
Friday, September 17 - mini cooking class, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Meet at the Recreation Center.
Friday, September 24 - open enrollment dinner at 6:30 p.m., location to be announced. Students in grades 7-12 and their parents/legal guardians are invited. Youth Development staff will introduce themselves and announce plans for the coming year. Registration is required by September 20.

Annual Halloween Party Community Meeting
A meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 16 at 6 p.m. to start planning the annual Recreation Department’s Halloween party. Anyone interested in volunteering for a committee is welcome. Volunteers are needed for advertising, food, decorating, games, costume contest and prizes, hay ride and clean up. Contact any of the department staff for more information.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT

New location for Behavioral Health Services
The main office is now located in the Annex Building at 579 Main Street in Oneida. All staff, phone and fax numbers are the same.

Auricular Acupuncture and Guided Imagery
The next session will be held September 1 from 5:15 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. in the Community Room of the Children and Elders Center. The final sesssion will be held October 6. Acupuncture and guided imagery are relaxation techniques that could help reduce stress, pain and anger levels, increase energy and quality of sleep, decrease cravings for alcohol and tobacco. Sessions led by Kara Kaplan, Behavioral Health Services mental health counselor and Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist. Open to individuals 18 and older. To sign up, call (315) 829-8760.

Health Department
Diabetes Self-Management Support Group
Due to the Diabetes Wellness Weekend, the group will not meet in September. The next regular support group is on Tuesday, October 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the C&E Center. lead the group in discussion of diabetes management. Topics can be introduced by individuals or by group leaders Mike Washo, CDE, and Kara Kaplan, mental health counselor at Behavioral Health Services. The group is open to diabetic and pre-diabetic Health Center clients. New members are always welcome. For more information, call Mike at (315) 829-8713 or 1-800-663-4324.

COMING IN OCTOBER
Zumba dance fitness - classes begin October 2 and will be held Saturdays at 10 a.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. Cost: $20 per month for Nation Members and $30 per month for Health Center clients and Nation employees. Participants must be at least 14 years old.

Final auricular acupuncture and guided imagery session - Wednesday, October 6 at the C&E Center, 5:15 p.m.

Annual Halloween party at the Recreation Center - date and details to be announced after the committee meeting.

  • Nation Honors Employees with 10-15-20 Years of Service

    Oneida Indian Nation employees with 10, 15 and 20 years of service were recognized at a Sept. 1 dinner. The Nation employment is now at about 4,800 and includes employees from both the government and business enterprises, including Turning Stone Resort and Casino. The Nation is the largest employer in Oneida and Madison counties, and the fourth largest employer in the16 counties of greater Central New York. This year, 154 employees reached the various career milestones.
