The Economic Impact of Oneida Nation EnterprisesOneida Nation Pumps $438 Million into Economy
Like every other business in the region, the Oneida Nation’s enterprises had to deal with the still-lagging economy in 2009.
Despite those challenges, though, the Nation remained the top employer in Oneida and Madison counties and one of the largest employers in the entire 16-county Central New York region. The Nation's Turning Stone Resort and Casino posted higher numbers over fiscal 2008, both in terms of number of visits and overall revenues. Income from operations at Turning Stone was up 16 percent over fiscal 2008. The resort wasn’t the only outstanding performer as the SāvOns posted a 12 percent increase in fiscal 2009. Here's a look at fiscal 2009 — by the numbers: • Just under $120 million in wages. including $5.1 million in bonuses, was paid to approximately 4,500 employees. • Employees paid more than $19 million in federal payroll taxes (income taxes and Social Security/Medicare). • Employees paid $4.2 million in state payroll taxes. • The Nation contributed more than $4.5 million to employees' 401(k) retirement accounts. • The Nation paid $22 million in medical and dental claims and administrative costs for its workers and their families. • The Nation's direct spending with outside vendors totaled more than $318 million in fiscal 2009. • Of that number, the Nation spend nearly $16 million on capital improvements and construction costs. • More than $85 million was paid to vendors in Oneida, Madison, and Onondaga counties; a little more than half that total went to vendors in New York State.
