Chapman Schanandoah Spanish American WarOneidas’ Legacy to FreedomOneida Members have proudly served as members of the military not only on behalf of their Nation, but on behalf of the United States of America. From the bloody battlefield at Oriskany during the Revolutionary War to the current conflict in Iraq, Oneidas have stepped up to the challenge of protecting democracy and promoting peace. The Oneidas proudly pause, along with the rest of the country, to pay tribute to veterans this month with emphasis placed on Oneida soldiers who served in times of war and in peace. Chapman Schanandoah (Turtle Clan) is among the soldiers we remember. ... Chapman Schanandoah (Turtle Clan) was a major war hero of the 1898 Spanish American War, who was decorated for bravery in the battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines. He is credited for single handedly defeating the Spanish fleet by blowing up a key Spanish ship. Remembering his service during the Spanish-American War, the Feb. 26, 1953, Syracuse Post-Standard memoriam to him recalled Chapman's bravery during the conflict: ''He was one of seven men who volunteered to ‡Admiral Dewy for a dangerous mission in Manila Bay. ''He was later cited by the U.S. Government for joining six others on a raft which they poled across Manila Bay to destroy the flagship of the Spanish navy, an accomplishment regarded as contributing to American victory.'' ‡ Admiral George Dewey commanded the American Naval fleet in Asia during the Spanish-American War and is known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines without combat loss of a single life of his own forces.
