ELC graduates pause during ceremonies on Friday, June 19. Graduation TimeThe Next Generation Marks Milestone
While the children’s song “Hello World” reminds us all that there are “dolls to dress, and beads to string,” on Friday the pre-kindergarten class at the Oneida Nation Ray Elm Children and Elders’ Center were focused on something more important — graduation..
“We are very proud of all of our graduates. Most of them have been here from infancy on, and we’re very happy to have all of you here to watch us today,” Tina Fox, supervising teacher, said at the beginning of the ceremony. The graduates -- decked out in their finest for this milestone -- donned handmade mortarboards. The class performed to three songs, including “This Little Light of Mine,” “Hello World,” and a variation on the classic “Music, Music, Music.” Teacher Jane Polachek said she has no doubt that this class of 13 will continue to reach new heights during their academic careers. “They’re all so eager to learn,” Jane said. “They’ve learned so much this year, it’s amazing. They’ve moved up through all the classes (here), some since they were six or eight weeks old. This September, they’ll be going on to separate kindergartens. Some will return here for after school programs, but not too many.” Highlights from the past year include a visit to the Fire Chief’s expo in June, the annual trip to the Nation’s Agricultural Department, and a visit to Price Chopper in Oneida to learn about nutrition. The class also enjoyed a visit to the Wolf Oak Acres farm, also in Oneida, and attended a performance of The Nutcracker in Utica.
