Nation Elders program participants joined forces with children attending the Early Learning Center in picking blueberries on Friday, July 24. Berry BoundChildren and Elders Unite to Pick Summertime Treat
Not bothered by the drizzle or cooler-than-normal summer temperatures, participants in the Oneida Nation Elders program and the Early Learning Center joined forces to gather a sweet summer treat — blueberries.
Blueberry picking Friday's trip to North Star Orchard in Westmoreland yielded delicious dark-blue and purple berries to be used in many different forms. Linda Williams (Turtle Clan) thought of various menu items while filling up her bucket. "How about some blueberry muffins," she asked, quickly changing her mind, adding, "I could try a blueberry pie — that'd be good, too." Finally a simple creation came to mind. "I know, pancakes," she said with renewed vigor for the task at hand. The ELC children also had a specific goal in mind. "We are going to be having a bake sale next week with our berries," ELC teacher Misty Finster said. "We are making a bunch of turnovers. We're going to make apple, blueberry, and cherry ones." The blueberry trip was just one of many activities uniting Elders and children — two of the Nation’s most prized populations — together during the year.
