Eat Right

Invariably, any discussion of good health echoes back to good nutrition. It was just one of the many topics covered during the Oneida Nation's Elders Conference.

The Nation Health Department’s own Mike Washo, registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator, shared his philosophy for eating and choosing nutritious foods, especially for
diabetics.

First up, a disclaimer from Mike: “The biggest myth about diabetes is you can’t have sugar. This is not true as long as you control your blood sugar level.”

Mike then provided his list of essential foods to consume each day: fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and lean meats. To avoid temptation, and overly processed foods, he advised shopping the perimeter of the grocery store.

“We need to return to old ways of preparing natural, healthy foods, not junk,” said Mike.

“Grow your own vegetables in a garden, shop farmers markets and prepare your foods from scratch. And remember the ABC’s of healthy eating: amount, balance and carbohydrate.

“Think before you eat. One ice cream sundae requires six hours of walking to burn off the calories.”
