Nature Walk Highlights Picnic

Annual Employee Celebration Held at Peaceful Pines

More than 2,300 employees, family members and friends enjoyed the 2012 Oneida Nation Employee Picnic. The annual event returned to Peaceful Pines campground for the second year in a row.

The top attraction was the traditional picnic fare -- hot dogs, hamburgers, steamed clams, potato salad, coleslaw, sweet strawberry shortcake treats, and so much more. And while some played on the carnival-like games and others stepped up to challenges such as the Team Olympics, a handful took advantage of a special nature walk lead by Sheri Beglen (Wolf Clan).

The summer weather was favorable to this walk in the woods, as Sheri pointed out the healing benefits of local plants and herbs.

“We’re going to talk about cattail and Joe-Pye weed, and dandelion and raspberry leaf, plantain and a few others. I have done this before with the Shako:wi Cultural Center and in my herbalist training,” she said. “Mostly I’m looking to show them something they can use.”

The annual affair is just one of many events geared specifically to employees, allowing them to enjoy some time with their family in an entertaining setting.

Special thanks goes out to the many volunteers who helped make this event a memorable one. Kudos to the following departments for their role in the event: bingo, construction, entertainment, environmental services, golf course and grounds, human resources, facilities, food and beverage, hotel front services, marketing, member benefits, public safety, recreation, security, supply chain, Oneida Indian Nation Police.
