See Clearly

Among the sessions during the Oneida Nation's 10th annual Elders Conference was one that focused on the importance of eye health.

Patty Kenjockety, health educator with the Seneca Nation Health Department, hosted a “Price Is Right”-styled game show neatly titled Eye Can See Clearly. With give and take from the audience, the eyes took center stage… so to speak.

Opening with a gratis answer, Patty advised the wearing of sunglasses everyday to protect eyes from UV rays. But after that the audience was responsible for the responses.

Here’s a synopsis of the covered topics:

• Diabetic retinopathy, loss of eye sight due to complications of diabetes; a leading cause of blindness.
• Glaucoma, pressure behind the eye that can cause blindness.
• Cataracts, a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye.
• Eye strain, tired eyes (not a disease).
• Floaters, look like black or gray specks, strings or cobwebs that drift around when you move your eyes, but are not harmful.
• Dry eye, caused by wind, heat, environmental conditions, menopause, side affect of medication or structural problem with eye lids.
• Conjunctivitis or pink eye, an inflammation of the cornea; infectious and non-infectious types, causes itching and irritation of eye.
• Macular degeneration, age-related condition that destroys sharp central vision, the leading cause of vision loss for people over 60.
