Oneidas Contribute $1 Million To Tsunami Relief Efforts

Since the days of the Peacemaker, the concept of sharing good fortune and helping those in need has been a core value in the Oneida culture. It was a key element in the Oneidas’ relations with the first European visitors to this region 400 years ago, and it continues to guide the Oneida Nation in the 21st century.

In 2005, the Oneidas generosity was tested repeatedly and the Nation responded nationally and internationally to humanitarian needs, helping communities around the globe cope with ongoing issues and acute natural disasters.

Most visible was the Nation’s contribution of $1 million to relief efforts in the wake of the Asian tsunami that left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. In January Nation Representative Ray Halbritter appeared on the NBC benefit special with “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno to announce the Nation’s donation.

“We’re just thankful that The Creator has blessed us so that we are able to help the victims of this terrible tragedy,” Halbritter said during the broadcast. “We’re grateful to have been able to help out.”
