Oneida Nation Foundation Puts Emphasis on Education of American Indian Youth
The Oneida Indian Nation Foundation is providing more than $25,000 to enhance educational opportunities for disadvantaged American Indian youth attending schools, colleges and special programs located on the economically-depressed Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations in the southern portion of South Dakota. The Foundation also contributed $500 to the Sundance Institute (Utah)-Native American Initiatives. According to Oneida Nation Foundation Chairman Chuck Fougnier, “We are providing funding for the full spectrum of education—from elementary right up to college. “ He added, “These dollars will help American Indian youth in some of the poorest areas of this country. Nineteen elementary and high schools in South Dakota will each receive a check for $1,000. In addition, we are providing $1,650 for Running Strong for American Indian Youth-Slim Buttes Agricultural Development Program and $5,000 to the Oglala Lakota College.” Fougnier went on to say that helping the less fortunate in Indian Country through educational assistance is the path to a better tomorrow. The 19 schools are as follows: American Horse Schools (Allen, SD) Batesland Schools (Batesland, SD) Bennett County Elementary (Martin, SD) Crazy Horse Schools (Wanblee, SD) Little Wound Elementary School (Kyle, SD) Little Wound Middle School (Kyle, SD) Little Wound High School (Kyle, SD) Loneman School (Oglala, SD) Our Lady of Lourdes School (Porcupine, SD) Pine Ridge Elementary School (Pine Ridge, SD) Pine Ridge High School (Pine Ridge, SD) Porcupine Schools (Porcupine, SD) Red Cloud Elementary School (Pine Ridge) Red Cloud High School (Pine Ridge, SD) Red Shirt Village School (Hermosa, SD) Rockyford Schools (Porcupine, SD) Wolf Creek Schools (Pine Ridge, SD) Wounded Knee Schools (Manderson, SD) -30-
