FACT SHEET: Positive Economic Impact of the Oneida Indian Nation

The Oneida Nation's sovereign presence in Central New York and its ability to operate businesses and administer governmental services create huge positive economic benefits for this region and New York State. Since 1992, the Nation has invested more than $4 billion in its government programs and business enterprises.

Job Creation, Payroll, Wages and Benefits:

  • The Nation has created almost 5,000 jobs in the last 17 years.
  • Nation payroll reaches 22 counties and 146 different communities in Central New York and New York State.
  • About 95 percent of all these jobs are held by non-Indian local residents (taxpayers).
  • Total payroll in fiscal 2008 was $126,200,000, including more than $4.7 million in annual performance bonuses.
  • In fiscal 2008, the Nation spent another $25.3 million in benefits for its employees, including health insurance (which also provides vision and dental benefits), life and disability insurance, and contributions to the Nation's 401(k) program.
  • Overall, the Nation's dollar investment in various benefits represents about 15 percent of what it pays out in wages each year.

Payroll Taxes Generated by Employees:

  • In fiscal 2008, the Nation's workforce paid $20.6 million in payroll taxes, including federal income taxes and Social Security/Medicare taxes.
  • The Nation's workforce paid $4.1 million in state income taxes.
    Capital and Construction Spending

  • In fiscal 2008, the Nation spent $4.6 million to the employees 401k accounts.

Vendor Spending

  • In fiscal 2008, the Nation spent more than $433 million with other businesses. Nearly 60 percent of the total was spent in the three county area (Oneida, Madison & Onondaga).
  • Approximately $150 million was spent in the three county area (Oneida, Madison, and Onondaga).
    The Nation purchases range from food supplies to paper towels, to services such as dry cleaning and snow plowing.
