Hole No. 5 at Atunyote Golf Club FACT SHEET: Golf at Turning Stone Resort
Home for four years (2007-2010) to the Turning Stone Resort Championship on the PGA TOUR, the Oneida Indian Nation’s resort has evolved into a premier golf destination, presenting five courses (three 18-hole courses and two 9-hole layouts), an indoor training center and an array of instructional programs.
Three preeminent golf course architects -- Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Rick Smith -- have each crafted masterpieces at Turning Stone. In addition, Turning Stone offers its own golf academy with a team of PGA-certified instructors. Atunyote Golf Club •Opened July 2004 •Designed by Tom Fazio Atunyote (uh-DUNE-yote) is an Oneida word that means “eagle.” The acclaimed venue was the home of the Turning Stone Resort Championship, an official PGA TOUR event, for four years from 2007-2010. Winners of the championship were Steve Flesch (2007), Dustin Johnson (2008), Matt Kuchar (2009), and Bill Lunde (2010). The course is highlighted by spacious fairways, large undulating greens and steep-faced bunkers that are hallmarks of a Fazio design. Other notable features include a preserved deadwood marsh, a rock formation, and several lakes, streams and waterfalls. The largest body of water, measuring 13 acres, runs along three fairways including the dramatic finishing hole. Atunyote is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Atunyote has five tee options for guests, ranging from 5,120 to 7,482 yards. The property, located in a secluded setting several miles from resort, includes a full-service clubhouse and practice area. Kaluhyat Golf Club •Opened August 2003 •Designed By Robert Trent Jones Jr. Kaluhyat (ga-LU-yat) is an Oneida Indian word that means “the other side of the sky.” The name reflects the impressive landscape that includes several plateau settings offering seemingly endless views of the surrounding terrain. In creating Kaluhyat, a Certified Bronze Audubon Signature Sanctuary, Jones preserved the innate features of the site, painstakingly incorporating mature forested areas, ancient wetlands, native plant life and wildlife corridors. The result is a course that, although relatively new to the landscape, gives players the feeling that it has been in place for a century or more. Kaluhyat is a classic shot-maker's course that rewards precision ball-striking and acute strategy. Its five sets of tees range from 5,293 to 7,105 yards. Shenendoah Golf Club •Opened May 2000 •Designed by Rick Smith Shenendoah is named in honor of the tribal chief who was instrumental in the Oneidas’ choice to side with the colonists during the Revolutionary War. With its generous fairways and sizeable greens, Shenendoah golf course is a popular host site for corporate outings and charitable events. While the magnificence of the design allows for recreational, player-friendly configurations, the course can also stand up to the rigors of professional tournaments. Five tee options range from 5,185 to 7,129 yards. A Certified Bronze Audubon Signature Sanctuary, the site's memorable aesthetics includes an assortment of wetlands, tall fields of native fescue grasses, sweeping landscapes and deep wooded areas. It's the dwelling for nearly 100 species of birds and scores of wildlife. Pleasant Knolls Pleasant Knolls is a player-friendly recreational course, offering a relaxing nine holes of par 36 golf. The layout features wide fairways, legendary crowned greens, water hazards and a gently rolling terrain. Sandstone Hollow The nine-hole, par three course was built with the busy golfer in mind. It’s not a pitch and putt course, as the Rick Smith- design winds through woods and wetlands with greens surrounded by native grasses and rock outcroppings. The course is a Certified Bronze Audubon Signature Sanctuary.
