FACT SHEET: Positive Economic Impact of the Oneida Indian Nation

The Oneida Nation's sovereign presence in Central New York and its ability to operate businesses and administer governmental services create huge positive economic benefits for this region and New York State. Since 1992, the Nation has invested more than $4 billion in its government programs and business enterprises.

Job Creation, Payroll, Wages and Benefits:

  • The Nation has created 4,500 jobs in the last 18 years.
  • Nation payroll reaches 22 counties and about 150 different communities in Central New York and New York State.
  • About 95 percent of all these jobs are held by non-Indian local residents (taxpayers).
  • Total payroll in fiscal 2010 was $126.6 million, including more than $5.1 million in annual performance bonuses.
  • In fiscal 2010, the Nation paid another $22 million in medical - dental claims and administrative costs for its workers and their families.

Payroll Taxes Generated by Employees:

  • In fiscal 2010, the Nation's workforce paid $19.3 million in payroll taxes, including federal income taxes and Social Security/Medicare taxes.
  • The Nation's workforce paid $4.5 million in state income taxes.
    Capital and Construction Spending

  • In fiscal 2010, the Nation spent $4.6 million to the employees 401k accounts.

Vendor Spending

  • In fiscal 2010, the Nation spent more than $285 million with other businesses.
  • More than $114 million was spent in the three county area (Oneida, Madison, and Onondaga).
    The Nation purchases range from food supplies to paper towels, to services such as dry cleaning and snow plowing.
