Gingerbread Village Popular Holiday Attraction

Visitors to the Oneida Nation’s Turning Stone Resort Casino have a chance to see what is likely the biggest gingerbread village in the Northeast. The eight buildings of this year’s gingerbread village measure about 53 feet long and are made up of 13,000 individual pieces of gingerbread. Oneida Nation Distributes More Than $5 Million in Bonuses

The Oneida Indian Nation awarded more than $5 million in bonuses to all eligible employees in its 4,500 employee workforce. In making the holiday bonus announcement, Nation Representative and CEO of Nation Enterprises Ray Halbritter said, “We believe that by investing in our employees and in our community, will we truly be successful as a business and as a people. Nation Event Puts Emphasis on Better Health for Employees

A healthy workforce is important to employees and their families, as well as the viability of an organization. That is why the Oneida Indian Nation holds a health fair for employees every year. This year’s event included a flu clinic where employees and members of the public had an opportunity to get a free flu shot. More than 500 flu vaccines were dispensed. The American Red Cross also conducted a blood drive open to Nation employees. The health fair attracted more than 80 exhibitors including the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Smile Therapy, The Center 4 Wellness, Mohawk Valley Imaging and Upstate Medical University. “It is allies like the Oneida that I am grateful for,” Fort Drum Garrison Command Sergeant Major tells Area Veterans at Nation’s Recognition Event

Nearly 500 veterans gathered at the Oneida Indian Nation’s Veterans Recognition Ceremony. The speaker, Fort Drum Garrison Command Sergeant Major John F. McNeirney remembered those who have served and those who are currently serving in the U.S. Military when he said, “These great warriors have served our nation well and demonstrated our core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage.” He stated, “All of those values (were) demonstrated by the Oneida Indian Nation, our first allies” when more than 200 years ago during the American Revolution, the Oneida Nation “pledged to support the new (ly) formed American Continental Army and provided unwavering support …” He went on to recognize the Oneidas for carrying their corn hundreds of miles to help George Washington’s starving troops at Valley Forge, noting “It is allies like the Oneida that I am grateful for.”

Turning Stone Draws Meetings from Near and Far; All of CNY Benefits

The Oneida Nation’s Turning Stone Resort Casino has become a magnet for meetings and events. The resort annually draws about 1,000 business meetings, trade shows and wedding receptions—both local and regional in origin. Recently, the Central New York Chapter of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) was on site. The event drew about 200 clinical laboratory professionals from the Syracuse, Utica-Rome, Rochester and Binghamton areas. Oneida Legends Entertain and Educate Youngsters at School Harvest Festival

Storyteller Birdy Burdick and Kandice Watson, educational outreach director, recently brought the story of the Oneida Indian Nation to students at Poland Central in Herkimer County. The two Oneida Nation members were there recently for that school’s Harvest Festival. They helped the students learn about the rich history and culture of the Oneida People through telling legends that Oneida children have heard from their elders for centuries.

Agreement Allows City Firefighters to Train at Nation-Owned Building

For the past couple of weeks, firefighters from the city of Oneida have been engaged in training exercises at a vacant building on Elizabeth Street owned by the Oneida Indian Nation and slated for demolition. The critical training is possible because of the cooperation between the two governments, allowing the city’s fire department to train in a safe environment. The Nation has reached similar agreements with other local fire departments, including Durhamville. Read More »

Oneida Nation Holds Successful Prescription Medication Take Back Program

The Oneida Nation conducted its first Prescription Drug Take Back program on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 at its Turning Stone Resort Casino. The event was done in cooperation with the U.S. Justice Department’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) which sponsors National Prescription Drug Take Back Days all across the country. The collection from the community, which netted 205 pounds of expired or unused medication, was done by the Oneida Nation Police Department. The medication turned in was then picked by DEA for proper disposal. The program was open to Nation Members, Nation employees and the general public. Read More »

Oneida Nation Creates Opportunity By Offering Jobs Along Many Career Paths.

A major city in the central part of the country recently advertised on its web site that it “has a workforce of more than 4,500 and is one of the largest employers in the metropolitan area.” It boasted that it offers employment in “more than 400 different job types from unskilled to professional, entry level to management.” The city stated that it is “committed to hiring a professional, productive, diverse workforce.” The Oneida Indian Nation, through its various enterprises and administration offices is practically a mirror of that city. It takes people from all backgrounds and experience to keep an organization of its size operating.

A recent review of the more than 400 jobs types the Oneida Nation offers revealed that nearly 14% are currently in management positions. The Nation offers jobs of all types requiring differing levels of training and education and employs: chefs, doctors, nurses, graphics designers, massage therapists, bakers, automotive technicians, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, engineers, police officers, horticulturists, information technology specialists, physical trainers, retail and marketing executives, musicians, audio-visual technicians, and customer service specialists to name a few.

Ray Halbritter Delivers Closing Remarks at Latino Upstate Summit

Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and CEO of Nation Enterprises, gave the closing address at the 2011 Latino Upstate Summit, held on Oct. 21 at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. The purpose of the conclave was to address the role of people of Latino descent in this country as it relates to community life, the economy and civic affairs. Speaking about the summit, Halbritter said “The Oneida people have a special understanding of the challenges faced by the Latino community in New York, and we have a unique appreciation for all the obstacles they have overcome to get to where they are today.” He added, “During these difficult economic times, it is critical that business leaders, community leaders and cultural leaders stand together to bring about positive change for our communities.”

Oneida Nation Police Host Joint Law Enforcement Training Session

The Oneida Nation Police Department, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), hosted two days of instruction for tribal and local law enforcement agencies. The first day of the session focused on investigative techniques utilizing digital photography, with hands-on exercises using state-of-the-art equipment. Day two was an intensive classroom seminar on issues related to gang violence. In addition to Oneida Nation police officers, representatives of several area municipal police departments participated. Iroquois Nationals Edge Team USA in The Bowhunter Cup

The Iroquois Nationals defeated Team USA 14-13 in The Bowhunter Cup held in the Event Center at the Oneida Nation’s Turning Stone Resort Casino. The game lived up to its billing as a friendly, yet competitive, match featuring two of the world’s powerhouses in the sport of lacrosse. There were several lead changes, and neither team ever led by more than two goals. Team USA had a 12-11 advantage at the end of the third quarter, but the Nationals rallied in the fourth frame with three straight goals to go ahead for good. The Iroquois Nationals are now 4-1 all-time against Team USA in indoor competition.

Oneida Nation Delegation Visits Navajo Nation

Leaders from the Oneida Indian Nation traveled to the Navajo Nation in Arizona. Their trip included a welcoming dinner, discussion of issues, a Navajo Nation Council Recognition Session, tours of the Navajo Nation Lands, a Navajo Nation parade, an arts and craft show, and a rodeo at the Navajo Fairgrounds. Indonesian Educators Visit Oneida Indian Nation

A group of educators from Indonesia toured the Oneida Nation on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The visit was under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program and was made possible by Meridian International Center and The International Center of the Capital Region. The group visited Turning Stone Resort and toured the Ray Elm Children and Elders Center, the Shako:wi Cultural Center and other Oneida Nation facilities. The visit to the Oneida Nation was one stop in New York’s Capital Region portion of a month-long tour of the U.S. designed to help the group gain an understanding of the American system of education. The tour includes becoming familiar with indigenous people and their culture.

Oneida Nation Living Historian Brings Revolutionary War to Life

Oneida Nation Member and Living Historian Samantha Meta presented a program for the public, The Six Nations at the Battle of Oriskany, on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Oriskany Battlefield. For their part, the Oneida Indian Nation fought alongside the colonists as their first ally in their fight for independence. During the American Revolution, the Oneidas stood with the colonists at battles in Oriskany, Saratoga and Barren Hill (PA), as well as carrying their corn to aid George Washington’s starving troops at Valley Forge. As a prelude to the Notah Begay III (NB 3) Foundation Challenge on August 31 at the Oneida Indian Nation’s Atunyote Golf Club, a golf clinc and fitness training session was held on August 29. The event was part of a partnership between the NB 3 Foundation and the PGA of America. The NB3 Foundation promotes sports and wellness to youth within Native American communities. This is the fourth year in a row the Oneida Indian Nation has sponsored the competition that brings eight of the world’s top golfers, including Begay and Tiger Woods, to raise money in the fight against diabetes and childhood obesity. Oneida Nation organizes voter registration drive for employees

Oneida Nation employees not yet registered to vote were given an opportunity to do so on two days in mid-August. In the last few years, about 200 employees annually become new voters and many others make sure their information is current so they can continue to vote.

Oneida Elders Provide Lap Quilts to Wounded Soldiers Unit at Fort Drum

Members and friends of The Oneida Nation Elders Program gathered 36 lap quits at the Oneida Nation Children and Elders Center on Tuesday, August 16th. The lap quilts, the result of months of tedious work, are destined for soldiers injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and were presented to Major William Otis from Fort Drum. Each quilt has at least one patch that reads, “Presented to wounded and disabled vets. Thank you. Oneida Indian Nation Elders Quilting group.”

Oneida Nation Leader Ray Halbritter Participates in White House Meeting on Economic Development

Boaters Now Have Access to Non-Ethanol Fuel at Oneida Nation Marinas

Mariner’s Landing Marina and Marion Manor Marina now offer non-ethanol fuel for marine engines. Since the introduction of ethanol blended fuels a few years ago boaters have struggled with fuel separation during storage and in wet environments, as well as poor engine performance.

Nation Hosts Picnic for Thousands of Employees and Guests

The Oneida Indian Nation’s annual employee picnic recently drew many of its 4,500 employees and their families. For the event, held this year at the Nation’s Peaceful Pines campground , the Food & Beverage Department at Turning Stone Resort Casino with the help of many employee volunteer served: more than 3,500 burgers with buns; more than 3,500 hot dogs and buns; about 2,000 chicken breasts; about 2,000 links of sausage; 600 pounds of salad greens; 1,000 pounds of strawberry topping; 72,000 clams; and more than 8,000 bottles of water. Big Turn Out for “First Allies” Casting Call

A casting call was held at Turning Stone Resort Casino on July 25, to search for extras for “First Allies,” a full length theatrical film financially-backed by the Oneida Indian Nation. The film, which focuses on the Oneidas’ involvement as the first ally of the colonists in their fight for freedom during the American Revolution, is looking for talent to fill roles as Native Americans, colonists and British troops, as well as behind-the-scenes positions, such as production assistants. "First Allies" tells the true story of the Oneidas, one of the six American Indian nations comprising the Iroquois Confederacy, which sided with the colonists in their fight for freedom. The film is based on the book "Forgotten Allies" by history professors Joseph T. Glatthaar and James Kirby Martin.

Oneida Member Brett Bucktooth Participates in White House Lacrosse Event to Spotlight Better Fitness and Health

Oneida Nation Member and lacrosse standout Brett Bucktooth visited The White House on July 11 as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative to encourage kids to adopt active, healthy lifestyles. The event, which included lacrosse demonstrations on the South Lawn, was attended by leadership from The White House, the Department of the Interior and the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as representatives from the Iroquois Nationals and other lacrosse teams.
