Oneida Nation Responds to Seizure of Cigarettes
Last week, law enforcement officials in Seneca and Cayuga counties seized cigarettes at convenience stores owned by the Cayuga Indian Nation. According to a story in the online edition of the Auburn Citizen on Nov. 30, the Cayugas will take their case to court this week. The Oneida Nation issued the following statement from its public affairs office: “Seizing American Indian-owned cigarettes or other products for sale on American Indian land is totally illegal and irresponsible. If this is threatened on any land of the Oneida Nation, we will press all of our rights fully. The smarter solution is for the parties to work together for a constructive resolution that meets everyone’s needs without trampling on Indian rights that are protected by federal law.”
