Oneida Indian Nation…………Year in ReviewThe past year was a time of great challenges and exciting opportunities for the Oneida Indian Nation. Three of the top stories for 2008 were—the August announcement by the Department of Interior to place about 13,000 acres of the Nation’s 17,000-plus acre reservation into federal trust; the Nation’s float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade; and the second year of the Turning Stone Resort Championship, an official PGA TOUR event. The State and the counties of Madison and Oneida chose litigation over negotiation so the land into trust decision is now facing a court challenge. The Oneida’s float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was the first American Indian float in that parade’s 82-year history. In early October, Dustin Johnson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. took first place honors among 131 other players to win the Nation’s Turning Stone Resort Championship and a first-place prize of just over $1 million.
