Golf at Turning Stone Took Root Ten Years Ago
The Oneida Nation’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino began creating a golf destination in 1999 with the opening of Sandstone Hollow, a par 3, nine-hole course designed by Rick Smith. The resort also purchased Pleasant Knolls, a nearby nine-hole recreational course.
A year later, the resort opened another course designed by Smith, the Shenendoah Golf Club, marking Turning Stone’s foray into 18-hole championship layouts. During its $350 million expansion in 2003-04, Turning Stone opened two additional championship courses, Kaluhyat Golf Club designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and Atunyote Golf Club designed by Tom Fazio. Atunyote is the host venue of The Turning Stone Resort Championship, an official PGA TOUR event. The 2009 Championship is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1 – Sunday, Oct. 4 with a Pro-Am on Wednesday, Sept. 30. All three of the championship courses have attained national recognition and are considered to be among the best golf courses in the country. In 2005, Turning Stone once again enhanced its golf experience for guests with the addition of the Golf Dome, an all-season practice facility that is now part of The Sportsplex, which also includes tennis and racquetball.
