Turning Stone’s Benefits to Oneida People Highlighted in Newsday Story

Newsday, a Long Island daily newspaper and one of the largest publications in the country, focused on the Oneida Indian Nation in a May 31 article, “The Oneida tribe: from poverty to prosperity.”

Oneida Nation Representative and Chief Executive Officer Ray Halbritter told the paper what its Turning Stone Resort and Casino has done for the Oneidas, “We were in poverty, a very bad existence. Because of our success, our people now go to school (college), have jobs (and) have medical care.” He added, “Before the casino opened we decided that the worse thing we could do was create a welfare mentality. We wanted our people to still have the incentive to help themselves.”

Newsday also spoke with Oneida Member Kathy Kuhl, who works for her tribal government and was able to attend college because of the Nation’s assistance. Kuhl told the paper, “The opportunities are there, you just have to seize them.”

The Newsday article was part of a larger series about the Shinnecock Indians on Long Island and their efforts to open a casino downstate.
