Children & Elders Center Turns 10

Ten years ago, the Oneida Nation opened the Ray Elm Children & Elders Center at the Village of the White Pines—on Nation lands south of the City of Oneida. The 35,000 square foot structure includes an all-copper roof (with the copper purchased from Revere in Rome, N.Y.) and is shaped like a giant “C”—depicting the arms of the Creator around the two most important parts of the population. Its center faces the North Star, which was traditionally used for guidance. Named for Oneida Elder Ray Elm (who passed away about 14 months before the building opened), the center focuses on activities for these key populations. On the children’s side there are daycare facilities, including classrooms, a kitchen and indoor/outdoor play areas. For the elders, there is a reading room, sewing area, carpentry-pottery workshop, dining room, exercise facilities and a classroom for painting and craft classes.
