Oneida Nation’s Economic Impact Nearly Half Billion Dollars a Year
The Oneida Indian Nation and its business enterprises, including Turning Stone Resort and Casino, had a direct economic impact of nearly $450 million during its fiscal year which ended Sept. 30, 2009.
The payroll for the Nation’s workforce of about 4,800 employees was more than $124 million and an additional $4.5 million was contributed to employee 401K accounts. On top of that, the Nation spent nearly $320 million for goods and services, of which more than $85 million was spent with local businesses in Oneida, Madison and Onondaga counties and more than $160 million for all of New York State. The Nation’s workforce had $19.2 million taken out of their paychecks in federal income taxes, Social Security and Medicare, and $4.2 million in state income taxes. The business interests of the Nation include Turning Stone Resort and Casino; a chain of a dozen SāvOn fuel and convenience stores; three marinas; an Angus beef and crop farm; a fishing lodge; a 3-D animation studio; and a national weekly newspaper, Indian Country Today.
