Oneida Member Brett Bucktooth Participates in White House Lacrosse Event to Spotlight Better Fitness and Health

Oneida Nation Member and lacrosse standout Brett Bucktooth visited The White House on July 11 as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s
“Let’s Move!" initiative to encourage kids to adopt active, healthy lifestyles. The event, which included lacrosse demonstrations on the South Lawn, was attended by leadership from The White House, the Department of the Interior and the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as representatives from the Iroquois Nationals and other lacrosse leagues. Bucktooth, who plays for the Iroquois Nationals and was a lacrosse star at Syracuse University, was on the Iroquois Nationals’ team that recently captured a Silver Medal in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Prague. He also plays professionally for the National Lacrosse League's Buffalo Bandits.

The First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” program includes “Let’s Move! in Indian Country.” According to its website: “Throughout our country’s history, Native communities have provided some of the best examples of healthy food and sustainable community-based practices. Many groups in Indian Country are continuing to lead by example by following traditional paths that have existed for thousands of years.”

In another effort aimed at tackling childhood obesity, the Oneida Indian Nation has partnered with the Notah Begay III Foundation to raise more than $2.4 million since 2008 to battle obesity and Type 2 diabetes among American Indian youth throughout this country. The Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge has been held at the Nation’s Atunyote Golf Club, a part of Turning Stone Resort Casino.
