Oneida Nation Holds Successful Prescription Medication Take Back Program
The Oneida Nation conducted its first Prescription Drug Take Back program on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 at its Turning Stone Resort Casino. The event was done in cooperation with the U.S. Justice Department’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) which sponsors National Prescription Drug Take Back Days all across the country. The collection from the community, which netted 205 pounds of expired or unused medication, was done by the Oneida Nation Police Department. The medication turned in was then picked by DEA for proper disposal. The program was open to Nation Members, Nation employees and the general public.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Days address a vital public safety and public health issue. More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
