Oneida Nation organizes voter registration drive for employees

Oneida Nation employees not yet registered to vote were given an opportunity to do so on two days in mid-August. In the last few years, about 200 employees annually become new voters and many others make sure their information is current so they can continue to vote.

As the one of the region’s largest employers, the Oneida Nation has long encouraged its employees to participate in the electoral process. Registering to vote is the first step in getting involved in choosing elected leaders for positions locally, in Albany and in Washington. The Nation knows it’s important to give its employees the opportunity to participate in choosing those who will decide what is important to them, their families and their employer.

Sometimes elections are decided by just a few votes, especially in local races such as town supervisor, town board, county legislative seats, city mayors (i.e. Oneida and Rome), and countywide offices like sheriff and county executive. With most of the Nation’s 4,500 employees living in Oneida, Madison and Onondaga counties, the clout is considerable, especially in close races. The Nation’s large employee base has impacted the outcome of local elections in recent years and will again.
