Teachers Also Have Field Trips

The Oneida Nation’s Shako:wi Cultural Center was one of the stops during a recent field trip, part of a three-day workshop designed for teachers of middle school and high school social studies. The New York State Museum-sponsored workshop focuses on cultural, historical, and contemporary legacies of Native Americans in New York State. This is one of the two groups of teachers to visit Shako:wi.

Another group, from the Rochester area, included about 80 teachers on a weekend field trip. Some of the teachers in this group spent time with Birdy Burdick at the Oneida Nation Cookhouse where she conducted a workshop on storytelling techniques. In this workshop teachers learned how to incorporate storytelling into their lesson plans.
