Oneida Nation Co-Sponsors Major Event Honoring Film Industry Icon Robert Redford - 2/18/10

The Oneida Nation was a sponsor of a recent gala honoring legendary actor and director Robert Redford. Redford was presented with an award, established in his name, that will become an annual recognition at the University of Southern California School of Theater in Los Angeles. The event drew more than 500 celebrities and film and entertainment industry leaders from across the country.

Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative and CEO of Nation Enterprises, is a member of the board of directors of the Environmental Media Association. He represented the Oneida Nation at the gala and spoke with Redford about the award and the event.

Halbritter said, "Robert Redford is a highly talented and committed actor and director, yet also a down to earth person, and he shares many of the same important values that define Native Americans generally, and the Oneida Nation in particular. He was an environmental activist and conservationist long before it was popular. What he has done to enhance future artists in the film industry through the Sundance Institute is extraordinary. This recognition by virtue of their award for his work on behalf of the film industry today and in the future is to be applauded."

In addition to Turning Stone Resort and Casino, the Nation also owns and publishes Indian Country Today, the leading national weekly newspaper in Indian country, and the Nation owns and operates Four Directions, Inc., an award-winning 3D animation/HD Cinematography studio and a clearinghouse for American Indians interested in getting into the film and television industry.
